Longevity for You

Wisdom in Living
Soul Searching for Spiritual Healing

Spiritual healing often begins as a sacred journey of living that involves change, growth, and self-discovery. Spiritual healing is spiritual living such that you live your life to the fullest to attain all-round wellness in the body, the mind, and the spirit. Spiritual healing brings about spiritual health that provides an optimum environment for that sacred life journey towards attaining a healthy spirit for natural self-healing of the body and the mind.

A human being consists of body, mind, and soul or spirit. Self-healing begins with the mind first, and then the body. But the soul is the essence of being.

Your mind consists of the subconscious mind (the deep mind) and the conscious mind (the superficial mind. Your body is made up of all the systems, organs, and cells. Your spirit or soul controls both your body and mind, for it is the essence of your being.

To illustrate, if your soul tells you one thing, but your subconscious mind tells you another, and your conscious mind generally follows the direction of the subconscious mind, then there will be disharmony between mind and soul. Remember, your conscious mind connects with your subconscious mind and your soul. Only when there is complete agreement among the conscious mind, the subconscious mind, and the soul, then there will be balance and harmony--the essence of self-healing. Yes, you have free will: your conscious mind can freely choose whatever it prefers. But the soul is your whole being: it controls everything.

Healthy Spirit for Self-Healing

A healthy spirit is food for the soul. According to Cicero, the celebrated Roman orator, "Diseases of the soul are more dangerous and more numerous than those of the body." Therefore, food for the soul is as important as food for the body, and it includes the following:

•  positive morals of mindfulness for compassion, hope, and love of self and others
•  positive values of faith, forgiveness, and integrity

Spiritual living contributes to a healthy spirit for spiritual healing, and hence self-healing of the mind and the body. But the first obstacle to spiritual living is too much focus on self and attachment.

Self and Attachment

According to the Bible,
"Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth." (Luke 12:15)

According to Buddha, too much focus on self often leads to attachment, which comes in the form of craving--wanting things one does not have-- and ignorance--craving without knowing the futility of the wanting. Attachment to material things is the source of human miseries. Non-attachment, on the other hand, is not about self-denial: it is the wisdom of knowing the impermanence of things, and therefore the non-attachment. Ignorance, on the other hand, is the absence of clarity of mind, or lack of self-awakening to the truth of non-attachment.

According to Socrates, the great Greek philosopher, human happiness could be attained only by limiting the needs of man. In other words, the art of living well requires you to find out what you need, and not what you want. For more information, visit the author's website:

According to the above, one of the criteria for spiritual living is non-attachment to material things. Non-attachment enables the focus on others, instead of on self. Without non-attachment, there is no spiritual growth, and incomplete spiritual living.

Mindfulness of Loving Kindness

With non-attachment, the soul begins to embrace mindfulness of loving kindness. As opposed to self-love, loving-kindness is mindfulness of others. This selfless love holds the key to spiritual living and spiritual healing of the soul.

Mindfulness begins with gratitude. If you are grateful for what you have, mindfulness makes you more willing to share what you have with others who are less fortunate than yourself. If you are mindful of your gratitude, you will become mindful of your loving kindness. Mindfulness is an attitude that can be developed through constant practice:

•   Develop a cheerful demeanor under any circumstance. See everything in perspective.

• Cultivate positive emotions, such as empathy (the ability to feel others' disappointments and sufferings).

•  Look for the goodness in others, instead of being prejudiced against  differences in beliefs and principles in others.

•   Always stop and think before you react to any difficult situation or circumstance.

•  Take the initiative to show mindfulness, instead of being the recipient. Remember, it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Purposeful Living

According to a study conducted at Rush University Medical College in Chicago, finding purpose in life makes life meaningful, leading to goal-directed behavior that may result in longevity. In other words, a purposeful living is spiritual living, an essential component of self-healing.

There are ways to enhance your spirituality for spiritual living:

•  Search within yourself for answers to your life problems. Becoming more self-reliant and self-sufficient may help you find your inner voice: what you love to do, and what touches your heart and soul. Your inner voice often tells you the ultimate truth about yourself.

•  Get to know more about yourself, especially your inner needs and values. Remember, your needs are different from your wants.

•  Live according to your own highest ideals, and adhere to them, regardless of what others may say.

•  Be mindful of your attitudes and feelings, not just about yourself, but also towards others. Make your everyday interactions with others an expression of your soul.

•  Consciously replenish your soul with your expressions of unconditional love, gratitude, and forgiveness towards others.

•  Develop positive spiritual thoughts through everyday affirmations and visualization. Practice daily meditation to identify the priorities in your life.

A healthy spirit is food for the soul. According to Cicero, the celebrated Roman orator, "Diseases of the soul are more dangerous and more numerous than those of the body." Therefore, heal your soul to begin your self-healing.

Emotional Health for Spiritual Healing

Emotional Problems

Emotions can affect mental health positively or negatively, and thus play a role in spiritual healing.

Anger is one of the emotions most difficult to handle, and one of the most devastating to emotional health, and hence the major cause of emotional problems. Anger is a strong emotional expression with violent outbursts and even aggressive behaviors.

One of the best anger control strategies is daily
meditation, which not only relaxes the body and mind, but also re-discover the priorities of life.

Unhealthy relationships result in relationship problems that cause mental stress, and thus affecting emotional health and spiritual healing.

The key to having good relationships is the way of Zen. Follow Zen's wisdom on love and relationship for better mental health:

•  Love is a gift, but you must be ready to receive it.

•  Real love does not hurt: love is a way of being, not feeling.

•  Love means never having to use another person to make you feel better about yourself. You feel good about yourself for who and  what you are.

•  Love is built of deeds. You do not "feel" love, you "do" love: it is made up of loving deeds.

Mental Disorders

Mental disorders may result from emotional problems which the mind cannot cope with, although mental disorders can be cased by genetics, chemical imbalance in the brain, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental toxins.

In addition to unhealthy emotions, mental habits and mental attitudes influence emotional reactions, which in turn affect the immune system, the circulatory system, and the brain, which is the hardware of thoughts and feelings--in short, they affect self-healing.

To improve overall emotional health to avoid mental disorders, develop the following positive attitudes:

•  Develop an attitude of responsibility.  You are responsible for your mental problems. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and mood medications may not solve your emotional problems. Do not give up your role and responsibility--this is one of the underlying causes of mental illness. Remember, spiritual healing holds the cure to all emotional problems; medications only control your symptoms, but do not cure your emotional problems.

•  Develop an attitude of willpower  Lack of willpower is one of the characteristics of any mental illness.  But an attitude of willpower is critical to changing habit-forming behaviors that may have perpetuated the disorders and prevented self-healing. For example, procrastination is one of the most devastating habits of mental depression.

Eating Disorders

Emotional problems may also lead to the development of eating disorders, which not only prevent self-healing but further impair emotional health.

Eating disorders are psychiatric illnesses due to distorted mental perceptions and impaired physical conditions. Eating disorders, a combination of complex psychological and physiological illnesses, appears in many forms, such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and food addiction.
